Landscape is Song¡¯s main theme of creation but he also draws nudes, flower-and-bird and still life. His works have succeeded in bringing about a reform of traditional genre of Chinese landscapes as they on the one hand absorb the Western approaches, and on the other retain the spirit of the Chinese heritage. They are noted for their expansiveness and subtlety as well as their power of moving the mind and senses of the viewers. There are breakthroughs in themes, composition, colouring, delineation of spatial and temporal changes and vision in them, which represent a new development in Chinese painting.
