Contemporary Chinese Landscape Paintings by Distinguished Masters
2009.5.16-2009.6.6
Wan Fung Art Gallery is proud to present the grand exhibition ‘Contemporary Chinese Landscape Paintings by Distinguished Masters’, featuring a hundred masterworks by twenty most celebrated landscape painters in China today. These twenty artists are leaders of various landscape painting schools in cities across China. We are also honored to have invited three renowned Hong Kong artists—Ho Pak Lee, Wong Hau Kwei and Hong Hoi to participate. The exhibition reflects the overall outlook of the landscape painting altar in China, and will bring you an extraordinary art experience.
As a unique product of Chinese civilization, landscape painting had developed into an independent species of art early in Sui and Tang Dynasties. In Song Dynasty, it reached the peak stage and continued to flourish thereafter. For a time in late Ming and Qing Dynasties, landscape painting became inclined to formalism and gave people a lifeless, stagnant, stereotyped and monotonous feeling. Until modern times, it redeveloped. Maestros of our previous generation such as Huang Binhong, Zhang Daqian, Li Keran, Guan Shanyue, Li Xiongcai, etc, attained prominent achievements by inheriting the old tradition and establishing their own new ones.
From 1970s till now, great talents appear continuously in New China. The most widely-recognized ones are Feng Linzhang, Feng Yiming, Song Di, Zhang Bu, Liu Maoshan, Du Yingqiang, Zhao Wuchao, Ho Pak Lee, Wong Hau Kwei, Hong Hoi, etc who injected vigor into landscape painting. They renovate the tradition, depict the nature and glorify the majestic country with various new techniques and styles, inaugurating a copious outlook of landscape painting unprecedented in Chinese art history. In all, contemporary landscape painting carries deep cultural connotation and a new flow of creativity and will continue to penetrate and influence other cultures.
At 08:00 on 10th May, TVB program ‘Cultural Plaza’ will introduce the exhibition and part of the exhibited paintings.
